History Camp

Early July is time for History Camp at the Warren County Historical Society! Run by our historian and Lebanon City School's long-time teacher, John Zimkus and exhibits coordinator, Jeanne Doan, our History Camp is for students entering fourth through eighth grades and has been the recipient of the History Outreach Award from Ohio Local History Alliance. In it's 27th year, 2019's focus was on “Southwest Ohio’s Fascinating Journey from Forest to Farms and Settlements to Cities.”

Campers learned about early pioneers, the tools they used, how they built bridges to expand and their impact on the ecosystem. We will discuss William Elmer Harmon and his impact on small towns across America beginning with Lebanon, Ohio. (He's the guy who has over 100 parks named after him.) They even had a day dedicated to Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11’s historic moon landing!

On field trip day, the campers traveled to the newly renovated Cincinnati Museum Center's Union Terminal Rotunda and to the Cincinnati History Museum to experience their recreation of the once-bustling Cincinnati Public Landing.

The camp days begin at 9 a.m. and end around 1:30 p.m. except for the field trip day when it ends at 2:30 p.m. Cost is $50 for Warren County Historical Society members and $75 for non-members. Check back for 2020's topic and schedule!
